Neben den Oscars und den Emmy Awards gehören die Golden Globes zu den wichtigsten Auszeichnungen der amerikanischen Entertainmentindustrie. Über die Vergabe bestimmt eine Gruppe von etwa 100 internationalen Journalisten. Zum 72. Mal wurden am 11. Januar die Gewinner in einer feierlichen, jedoch recht leblosen Zeremonie gekürt. Genrefilme und -serien waren bereits bei den Nominierungen eine Randgruppe. Immerhin waren Kathy Bates und Jessica Lange für American Horror Story: Freak Show nomiert, gingen jedoch leer aus.

Klarer Gewinner des Abend war der Film Boyhood.
