Heute Nacht wurden in Los Angeles die jährlichen Oscars verliehen. Als bester Film konnte sich dabei das Drama Coda durchsetzen. Der Sci-Fi-Film Dune war dagegen vor allem in den technischen Kategorien erfolgreich und holt mit sechs Trophäen die meisten Oscars des Abends. So gewann die Romanadaption den Preis für beste Kamera, besten Schnitt, besten Ton, beste visuelle Effekte, bestes Szenenbild und beste Musik.

Für den Aufreger des Abends sorgte allerdings Darsteller Will Smith. Als Comedian Chris Rock während seiner Präsentation für den besten Dokumentarfilm einen Witz über Smiths Ehefrau Jada Pinkett machte, begab sich der Darsteller auf die Bühne und schlug Chris Rock ins Gesicht. Später wurde Smith dann auch noch selbst mit einem Oscar als bester Darsteller ausgezeichnet, wobei er sich dann tränenreich für seinen Angriff entschuldigte.

Weniger kontrovers wurden dagegen die Preise für die weiteren Darsteller verliehen. Als beste Darstellerin wurde Jessica Chastain ausgezeichnet, die Oscars für die besten Nebendarsteller gewannen Ariana DeBose und Troy Kotsur. Der Preis für den erstmals eingeführten Fan Oscar ging an Zack Snyders Army of the Dead.
